Nature for all.

Rocky Mountain Ascent provides equitable nature-based experiences for Colorado youth, families, and young adults in crisis. By entering into reciprocal relationships with land and community, we support our guests in restoring their sense of personal sovereignty.

WHO WE SERVE
We focus our services on Colorado youth and families who face the steepest barriers to the outdoors: children in foster care, group homes, residential treatment, survivors of abuse, and families experiencing homelessness. We bring equity to our work in concrete ways: all programs are free, transportation is provided, gear and meals are included, and our staff are trained in trauma-informed care. We partner directly with organizations already trusted by the communities we serve, and we welcome every guest regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, immigration status, or background/experience level.

WHY WE DO IT
Nature is for all
with the money
with the knowledge
with the transportation
with the gear
We believe that connection is the foundation of healing; connection to Earth, connection to Other, and connection to Self. All people deserve access to these forms of connection, regardless of life circumstance. Our organization seeks to provide nature access and education to the members of our community facing the highest barriers to these services. For youth in foster care, group homes, and shelters across Colorado, these barriers to connection are compounded by instability, trauma, and lack of trusted adult connection. RMA removes every one of these barriers — programs are 100% free, transportation is provided, all gear and meals are included, and our experienced staff guide every experience.

OUR HISTORY
Rocky Mountain Ascent is the successor of the Knights of Heroes Foundation (KOH), a nonprofit organization that was started in 2007 in response to a growing need for positive adult mentorship for Gold Star Children. In 2018, KOH began hosting day and overnight trips for children from group homes in Colorado Springs. These visits sparked a passion in KOH volunteers and graduates, who committed to expanding the program working with local youth in the foster care system. As major combat operations overseas ended and the population of Gold Star children declined, RMA's founders recognized a growing local need: Colorado youth in foster care, group homes, and shelters were facing the same barriers to nature, mentorship, and stability that KOH had spent 15 years addressing. RMA was established in 2022 to bring that same model of nature-based healing to Colorado's most vulnerable youth and families.
